Another season of Advent is upon us. Advent is a time meant to reflect on what the coming of Jesus means, not only to the world, but also to each individual soul. The word “advent” means “coming.” It is a season that begins in late November or early December. This year it begins on December 1.

Different expressions of Advent exist, but the Advent practice usually involves an Advent wreath and the lighting of candles, with each Sunday’s lighting focusing on a particular theme (Hope, Peace, Joy, Love). Traditionally, Advent candles consist of 1 pink, 3 purple, and a larger white candle. The order of lighting the candles is 1st week, purple; 2nd week, purple; 3rd week, pink; 4th week, purple. The white candle, which represents Jesus Christ, is to be lit on Christmas Day.

Celebrating Advent with your family is a meaningful practice. Even young children can get involved. There are many inspiring Advent devotionals and calendars (even interactive ones for children).

The purpose for observing Advent is to help us as believers keep our focus on Jesus, the real reason for this awesome season. Click the button below to begin your Advent journey with provided weekly readings and devotionals.
